The Opportunity: Legal Officer

We are looking for a highly competent and detail-oriented Legal Officer to provide critical legal support across our diverse programmes and operations. This role is central to ensuring our activities are legally sound, compliant, and effectively contribute to our advocacy goals. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in legal research, document management, regulatory compliance, and providing expert legal counsel to advance HEDA's objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide comprehensive legal advice and guidance on the organisation's operations, programmes, and strategic initiatives.

Conduct thorough legal research, prepare insightful legal opinions, briefs, and memoranda on various legal issues.

Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of legal documents, including contracts, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), agreements, and policies.

Support litigation processes, including preparing legal documents, coordinating with external counsel, and managing case files.

Ensure strict compliance with all relevant Nigerian laws, regulations, and internal policies, proactively identifying and mitigating legal risks.

Represent HEDA Resource Centre in meetings, negotiations, and legal engagements with stakeholders, partners, and government agencies.

Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, providing timely analysis and recommendations to inform our advocacy and policy work.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date legal records, databases, and contribute to the development of legal publications and knowledge resources.

Contribute to a collaborative team environment, undertaking additional duties as required to support the organisation's mission.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) Degree from a recognized and accredited institution.

Must be called to the Nigerian Bar, with a valid Barrister-at-Law (BL) certificate.

A minimum of 2-5 years of relevant post-call experience in legal practice. Experience within an NGO environment or litigation practice is a significant advantage.

Demonstrated strong knowledge and understanding of Nigerian laws, regulatory frameworks, and legal procedures.

Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of legal documents, including contracts and agreements.

Skills & Competencies:

Exceptional legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex legal information.

Superior written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulating complex legal concepts clearly and concisely.

High level of attention to detail and accuracy in all legal work.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with diverse teams and external stakeholders.
