Job Description

The Associate is a key member of the firm’s legal practice team, responsible for delivering high quality legal services across advisory, transactional and litigation mandates. This role involves conducting in-depth legal research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, managing client matters and supporting senior lawyers in complex cases and transactions. The Associate serves as a legal solutions provider, ensuring accuracy, professionalism and responsiveness in all client dealings. The Associate reports directly to the Senior Associate or Managing Partner, depending on the assignment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal Research & Advisory

● Conduct thorough legal research on statutes, case law, and regulatory guidelines.

● Provide practical, solution-oriented legal opinions and memoranda.

Document Drafting & Review

● Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, pleadings, and other legal documentation.

● Ensure all documents meet professional standards and client expectations.

Case & Transaction Management

● Manage assigned cases and transactions from start to finish under supervision.

● Monitor court filings, deadlines, and compliance requirements.

● Liaise with clients, courts, and regulatory agencies as required.

Litigation & Dispute Resolution

● Represent clients in court, tribunals, and arbitration where applicable.

● Prepare case strategies, witness statements, and evidentiary bundles.

Corporate & Commercial Law Practice

● Review, prepare, and manage corporate governance and commercial agreements.

● Support due diligence exercises for mergers, acquisitions, and financing deals.

Compliance & Regulatory Advisory

● Advise clients on compliance with statutory and regulatory frameworks.

● Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting client operations.

Client Engagement & Relationship Management

● Build and sustain strong professional relationships with clients.

● Provide timely updates and ensure a client-centered approach in all matters.

Knowledge Management & Training

● Maintain accurate legal records and knowledge databases.

● Mentor junior associates, interns, and participate in internal training sessions.

Firm Support & Development

● Contribute to the firm’s practice development initiatives, publications, and presentations.

● Assist in business development, client pitches, and professional networking.

SKILL SET

● Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

● Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

● High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational discipline.

● Proficiency in MS Office Suite and legal research platforms (e.g., LexisNexis, Law

Pavilion).

● Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

● Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and in teams.

● Client service-oriented with proven ability to build trust and maintain relationships

Requirements

Minimum of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree and Call to the Nigerian Bar.

● Minimum of 4 years post-call experience in a reputable law firm or corporate legal

department.

● Experience in litigation, maritime law, corporate/commercial law, or regulatory advisory (depending on firm’s practice focus).

● Demonstrated track record of handling legal matters with minimal supervision.

● Continuous professional development (CPD) participation and evidence of relevant certifications will be an added advantage.
