About the scholarship
The University of Pretoria Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a fully funded initiative to support academically talented African students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria (UP), one of South Africa’s leading research universities. Covering tuition, accommodation, living expenses, travel costs, and study materials, the program empowers scholars to focus on their academic and leadership development. UP offers a wide range of programs, from engineering and health sciences to humanities and law, all designed to address Africa’s developmental challenges. Scholars benefit from comprehensive support, including mentorship, leadership training, career counseling, and community engagement opportunities, preparing them to become transformative leaders in their communities.
The program aligns with the Mastercard Foundation’s vision of fostering inclusive growth and social change across Africa. Scholars are encouraged to participate in community service projects, internships, and research initiatives that tackle issues like poverty, education access, and sustainable development. UP’s vibrant campus in Pretoria provides access to modern facilities, including advanced research centers and libraries, as well as a diverse, multicultural student body. By supporting first-generation students and those from marginalized communities, the program aims to create a ripple effect of positive impact, equipping graduates with the skills and networks to drive economic and social progress across the continent.
