We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Senior Legal Counsel to join our team in Ogun. This pivotal role will be instrumental in safeguarding the company's interests in all land-related transactions and ensuring compliance with Nigerian legal frameworks.

The Opportunity

As the Senior Legal Counsel specializing in land and real estate, you will lead all legal aspects of our land acquisition, development, and management initiatives. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your extensive expertise in a challenging and impactful environment, contributing directly to the company's strategic growth and operational success.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Due Diligence: Conduct comprehensive legal due diligence for all land transactions (purchase or sale), including verification of land ownership, review of historical records, and identification of any disputes, encumbrances, or mortgages.

Document Management: Draft, review, and manage a wide range of legal documents pertaining to land transactions, such as Deeds of Assignment, Contracts of Sale, Land Purchase Agreements, and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).

Regulatory Compliance & Approvals: Oversee and assist with land title documentation and government approval processes, including Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and Excision Gazettes.

Government Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact and coordinate effectively with relevant government authorities, including the Ogun State Bureau of Lands and Survey and the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, to facilitate land approval processes.

Dispute Resolution: Strategically handle and resolve legal disputes related to land matters, including ownership disputes, encroachment issues, and contractual disagreements.

Negotiation & Risk Management: Actively participate in land transaction negotiations, provide expert legal advice to management, and proactively manage legal risks to protect company assets and interests.

Compliance Assurance: Ensure all company land transactions and development activities strictly comply with applicable Nigerian laws and regulations.

Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and provide training to the legal team, fostering a collaborative environment and coordinating all legal matters within the company.

Requirements

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) or a higher legal qualification.

Professional Standing: Must be qualified to practice law in Nigeria and be a registered member of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive legal experience, with at least 5 years specifically focused on land law or real estate law.

Legal Expertise:

In-depth knowledge of Nigerian land law, real estate law, contract law, and land registration procedures.

Proven familiarity with Nigerian land approval and title processes, including charting, survey verification, land registration, and Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).

Key Skills & Attributes

Exceptional legal analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong negotiation and communication abilities, both written and verbal.

Demonstrated ability in legal due diligence, contract drafting, government approval process management, land dispute resolution, and legal risk management.

High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience working with land development companies.

Familiarity with complex land transaction processes.

Extensive experience in dealing with government land approvals at various levels.
