Legal Specialist

The Legal Specialist will provide technical leadership and strategic oversight for all legal programming under the Danish Refugee Council’s Protection and Livelihoods interventions in Nigeria, with a primary focus on North West Nigeria.

The role supports the delivery of legal awareness, legal counselling, housing, land and property (HLP) support, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) through close collaboration with DRC field teams, national partners, and coordination structures. The position also contributes to national-level legal analysis and programme quality assurance.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Oversight & Strategy

Provide technical oversight for all legal activities within DRC Nigeria programmes

Lead strategic decision-making for the Legal Aid Programme in collaboration with Protection leadership

Guide development of legal programming through partnerships with local actors

Partner & Capacity Development

Supervise and technically support partner legal staff

Conduct trainings and capacity building for DRC staff and partners

Support partner assessments and trainings of trainers

Programme Design & Quality

Develop SOPs, legal tools, questionnaires, and outreach materials

Ensure MEAL frameworks and legal indicators are embedded in legal activities

Conduct field visits to ensure quality delivery of HLP and access-to-justice services

Develop legal needs assessment tools to inform programme design

Legal Research & Coordination

Conduct legal research and contribute to legal analysis for programme frameworks

Participate in legal coordination meetings and represent DRC as required

Coordinate with DRC Global Legal and HLP Advisors

Work across departments to integrate legal aspects into broader programming
