The Opportunity

Join our dynamic and globally integrated Legal team as a Legal Counsel based in Abuja. This is a unique opportunity to thrive in a high-energy, client-facing, multi-cultural, and multi-lingual environment. You will play a crucial role in supporting our organization across multiple countries and legal systems, applying and developing your negotiation and drafting skills within a highly collaborative setting. This position reports directly to the Head of S&P Global Energy Legal – EMEA.

What You'll Do

Serve as a primary legal advisor, responding to internal client inquiries and providing comprehensive support on legal matters throughout the entire contract lifecycle.

Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of complex commercial agreements for financial information, analytical products, and services. This includes, but is not limited to, distribution, channel partner, strategic, customer, data, technology vendor, and marketing agreements.

Assess and manage data rights across various agreements to ensure compliance and protection.

Safeguard the Company’s intellectual property and general practices, actively working to mitigate liability and risk exposure.

Develop and deliver training sessions to the commercial organization on legal and contracting procedures, as well as relevant policies concerning competition law, privacy, and other regulatory matters.

Identify, enforce, and provide guidance on appropriate legal policies and procedures.

Contribute to special projects as needed, extending beyond routine client-facing contracting responsibilities.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications

Law Degree from an accredited institution.

Minimum of 5 years of post-qualification legal experience, either in-house or at a law firm working with in-house clients. In-house experience is a significant plus.

Fluency in both French and English is essential, with excellent verbal and written communication skills in both languages.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

Strong working knowledge of contract law and intellectual property law.

Demonstrated understanding of international laws relevant to our jurisdictions, including copyright and other proprietary rights, data privacy, warranties, indemnification, disclaimer of liability, and information reuse provisions.

Proven ability to negotiate and draft complex legal agreements effectively.

Exceptional analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience in the commodity, energy, or financial information sectors is advantageous.
