Job Description

Policy and Government Engagement supports Evidence Action Nigeria's efforts to strengthen relationships with government stakeholders and advance evidence-based policy change. This role exists to assist in research, stakeholder engagement, and communication activities that facilitate the adoption and scale-up of cost-effective interventions within Nigeria's public health and development systems. The intern will contribute to policy analysis, documentation of engagement activities, and the development of communication materials that translate evidence into actionable insights for policymakers. Through this position, the intern helps bridge the gap between research evidence and policy implementation while building critical skills in governance, advocacy, and strategic communication.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Policy Research and Analysis
  • Conduct desktop research on relevant policies, government programs, and legislative developments affecting Evidence Action's programmatic areas
  • Review and synthesize policy documents, white papers, and government reports to identify opportunities for evidence-based advocacy
  • Prepare policy briefs and background notes that summarize key findings and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Monitor policy trends and emerging governance issues within Nigeria's health and development sectors on an ongoing basis, keep a record of government appointees and stakeholders and update any changes in leadership of ministries and MDAs
  • Compile and maintain a database of relevant policy resources and stakeholder contacts
  • Government and Stakeholder Engagement Support
  • Assist in coordinating meetings and engagement activities with government officials, ministries, and agencies
  • Prepare briefing materials, talking points, and presentations for stakeholder meetings and policy dialogues
  • Attend policy meetings, workshops, and conferences to support the Senior Associate.
  • Support regular update of stakeholder mapping exercises to identify key decision-makers and influencers within government structures
  • Draft follow-up correspondence and meeting summaries to maintain effective communication with government partners
  • Takes initiative to identify policy trends, opportunities, and challenges relevant to Evidence Action's work without constant supervision
  • Communication and Knowledge Management
  • Develop communication materials including presentations, contributions for newsletters, social media content, and success stories that highlight policy engagement achievements
  • Translate technical research findings into accessible formats for policymakers, including one-pagers, infographics, and slide decks
  • Draft internal reports and updates that document policy engagement activities and progress toward objectives
  • Maintain organized filing systems for policy documents, correspondence, and engagement records in both physical and digital formats
  • Support the creation of content ( Quality pictures and Videos) for Evidence Action Nigeria's website and external publications related to policy work
  • Event Coordination and Logistics
  • Assist in planning and organizing policy roundtables, stakeholder workshops, and advocacy events in collaboration with the team
  • Coordinate logistical arrangements including venue booking, participant invitations, materials preparation, and catering where necessary
  • Prepare event agendas, participant lists, and documentation materials to ensure smooth execution of engagement activities
  • Provide on-site support during events to facilitate registration, manage technical equipment, and address participant needs
  • Compile post-event reports that capture key takeaways, participant feedback, and recommendations for future activities
  • Monitoring, Documentation and Reporting
  • Track and document all policy engagement activities, meetings, and communications in the organizational database or tracking system
  • Support the collection and analysis of data related to policy influence and government collaboration outcomes
  • Contribute to quarterly and annual reports by providing accurate information on policy engagement milestones and challenges
  • Maintain an up-to-date calendar of relevant policy events, government deadlines, and advocacy opportunities
  • Assist in developing case studies that demonstrate the impact of Evidence Action's policy engagement efforts.

  • Participate actively in team meetings, providing updates on assigned tasks and seeking guidance when needed
  • Collaborate with program, research, and communications teams to ensure alignment between policy engagement and programmatic activities
  • Support other team members with administrative tasks and ad hoc projects that advance the organization's policy objectives
  • Engage in capacity-building opportunities including training sessions, webinars, and learning exchanges to develop professional skills
  • Provide general administrative support to the Policy and Government Engagement team as required

Requirements

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, International Development, Public Health, Development Studies, Communications, or a related field
  • Strong academic performance with a clear interest in evidence-based policy, governance, and development issues
  • Prior internship or volunteer experience in policy research, advocacy, or the development sector is preferred
  • Experience working with government institutions, NGOs, or international development organizations is an added advantage
  • Demonstrated awareness of Nigeria's governance structures, policy landscape, and current affairs
     

Technical Skills

  • Strong research and analytical skills, with ability to synthesize complex policy documents
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), google docs, sheet and slides.
  • Familiar with canva and other design templates.
  • Data collection and basic analysis capabilities
  • Familiarity with policy monitoring and evaluation frameworks


     

Communication Skills

 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; understanding and speaking Hausa is an advantage but not a requirement.
  • Ability to prepare policy briefs, reports, and presentations for diverse audiences
  • Experience in drafting communications materials such as contribution for newsletter, social media content, or stakeholder updates
  • Able to take great pictures and videos during meetings
  • Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with government officials, partners, and community stakeholders
  • Ability to translate technical evidence into accessible language for policymakers

I learned this firsthand.I was awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship to study International Law in the United Kingdom during the 2022/2023 academic session, but it did not happen on my first try. The first year I applied, I thought I had done everything right. I started preparing about a month before the scholarship deadline, which to me then seemed early enough. I wrote my essays diligently and submitted before the deadline.However, I was utterly disappointed when I received a rejection email a few months later. I asked myself, “How could they? I put in a lot of effort.”I applied again the following year, and this time, I was successful. So, what changed? Two things: information and preparation.In my second attempt, I began preparing almost a year ahead. I had realised that every scholarship application needs a hook, and how well you fit into that hook and its appeal to the selection committee often determine your chances. In other words, you need a relevant niche and a coherent, compelling story that ties together your experiences, interests, reasons for applying, and future aspirations.All these take time. So, if you are planning to apply for a scholarship, here is my advice: start early. Do not wait until the call for applications opens. Identify your theme and your overall story, because they are not the same. Read till the end and I will briefly explain the difference. Then highlight any gaps and start working to fill them.Every activity you engage in, including volunteering, short courses, and work experiences, becomes a building block for your narrative. And if your path is not perfect or linear, that is okay. What matters is how you tell your story. Explain the gaps and show growth and purpose.When the time comes to write your essays, do not rush it. Gather information. Read successful applications and consult others who have been through the process, either in person or through their online content on platforms such as YouTube or LinkedIn.Finally, remember that applying for scholarships takes resilience and patience. Some people get it on their first try, while others, like me, get it after learning from failure. Most importantly, put your best foot forward and leave the rest to God.Bonus tip: In this context, your theme is the niche or central focus that runs consistently through your entire application. Your story is the narrative that ties together your experiences, your motivation for applying, and your future aspirations.
