Job Description

About the job:

  • The ideal candidate will be responsible for in-house legal matters, including drafting agreements, addressing compliance issues, and participating in negotiation discussions.
  • In order to succeed, this candidate should feel comfortable working with in-house and outside counsel on a variety of legal matters.

Responsibilities:

Legal Advisory:

  • Provide legal guidance to management and departments on regulatory, contractual, and corporate issues.
  • Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for practical application in business operations.

Contract & Documentation Management:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements, including vendor contracts, service agreements, NDAs, and MoUs.
  • Ensure all contracts comply with internal policies and applicable laws.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations under Nigerian law and relevant sector regulations.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies on filings, licences, and obligations (e.g., CAC, CBN, NCC, FIRS).

Risk Management & Dispute Resolution:

  • Identify and mitigate legal risks proactively.
  • Coordinate litigation, arbitration, and settlements; manage external legal counsel as required.

Corporate Governance:

  • Maintain corporate records, including board resolutions and filings.
  • Support leadership with legal insight on strategic decisions.

Training & Policy Development:

  • Review and develop internal policies from a legal perspective.
  • Conduct staff training on legal topics (e.g., data privacy, AML/CFT compliance).
  • General Legal Support:
  • Assist departments (e.g., finance, HR, operations) on legal issues.
  • Stay updated on legal trends and regulatory changes relevant to the business.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • LL.B and B.L (called to the Nigerian Bar)
  • Minimum of 5 years post-call experience in corporate/commercial law
  • Prior in-house experience or exposure to fintech, telecoms, or financial services is an advantage.
