  • An effective and efficient in-house Legal team with the ability to provide relevant information and data for the overall objectives of the Company’s operations.
  • The Legal team would also serve as the Company’s Legal Advisors.
  • The Legal Analyst is responsible for providing oversight on all activities requiring legal expertise which includes drafting agreements, legislations, policies, strategic documents, and all other related matters.
  • The duties include communicating with business owners and industry professionals to identify legal matters, and compiling their findings into a comprehensive report for their employer to use when making business decisions.
  • The Legal Analyst shall cover a range of specialties which include drafting of agreements, legislations, policies, and policies review, advisory services, board governance and compliance, in the course of carrying out the responsibilities detailed below.

Responsibilities
Provide Support to the SGFL Legal & Research Team:

  • Examine and analyze laws, statutes, and policies on related cases and render advice and review all documents with legal implications.
  • Preparation of documentation for filing in various meetings connected with legal matters and drafting of legal agreements/contracts, forms, letters of undertaking, memorandum of understanding, and letters of guarantee for projects at hand.
  • Develop an up-to-date Sage Grey Policy Database which serves as a pool for all the operational policies and internal regulations applicable to the Company and respective clientele. (Excel sheet and Dataroom in a chronological format)
  • Advise the Company on the necessary underlying commercial legal structures to develop and strengthen companies’ economic growth and serve as a representative to negotiate, promote, interpret, and enforce trade and investment agreements with local and international stakeholders.
  • Advise the Company on all impact-related matters as pertains to the company’s operations and projects. This includes understanding the social, environmental, and economic effects of the company’s activities, ensuring alignment with sustainability goals, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder expectations.

Generating Industry Knowledge:

  • Remain fully informed on market trends, and regulatory compliance, provide recommendations and implement best practices.
  • Attend meetings with clients based on applicable industries and provide legal advice where necessary.
  • Review the applicable laws and comparative analysis on the amended regulators as well its implications on the Company’s operations and projects
  • Be fully informed on all impact-related matters as pertains to the company’s operations and projects.

Organizational Support:

  • Support the team with other research and analytical projects/board related matters
  • Support the design and implementation of field research projects using survey design and/or experimental methods
  • Perform other tasks as may be assigned from time to time.

Secondary Responsibilities:
Writing and Editing:

  • Organize, develop, and maintain data and information for easy reference (simple excel files, tables etc.)
  • Draft, edit and proof-read different types of documents (background work, reports, power points, etc.)
  • Harmonize and consolidate contributions and inputs (from within and outside the Company) in the document development process
  • Prepare summary notes for projects and client data room.

Prepare minutes of meetings:

  • Understand the project before attending meeting
  • Review client documentation before attending meeting
  • Note down the attendees’ names, position, venue, time, salient point and action plan.

Project Documentation Review:

  • Review all information related to the Project
  • Prepare summary notes
  • Develop a comprehensive list of enquiries about the Client and the Project
  • Attend Project Discovery Sessions and present the industry analysis related to the Project and recommended positions

Requirements

  • An experienced lawyer with at least 1 year of practicing law post-call with good knowledge of commercial, and corporate laws
  • A working knowledge of the legal system in Nigeria;
  • Demonstrates integrity by modeling high values and ethical standards and in-depth knowledge of development issues.
  • Ability to actively work towards continuing personal learning and development in one or more Practice Areas, as well as to act on a learning plan and to apply newly acquired.

Your Scholarship Journey Doesn’t Start with an Essay

I learned this firsthand.I was awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship to study International Law in the United Kingdom during the 2022/2023 academic session, but it did not happen on my first try. The first year I applied, I thought I had done everything right. I started preparing about a month before the scholarship deadline, which to me then seemed early enough. I wrote my essays diligently and submitted before the deadline.However, I was utterly disappointed when I received a rejection email a few months later. I asked myself, “How could they? I put in a lot of effort.”I applied again the following year, and this time, I was successful. So, what changed? Two things: information and preparation.In my second attempt, I began preparing almost a year ahead. I had realised that every scholarship application needs a hook, and how well you fit into that hook and its appeal to the selection committee often determine your chances. In other words, you need a relevant niche and a coherent, compelling story that ties together your experiences, interests, reasons for applying, and future aspirations.All these take time. So, if you are planning to apply for a scholarship, here is my advice: start early. Do not wait until the call for applications opens. Identify your theme and your overall story, because they are not the same. Read till the end and I will briefly explain the difference. Then highlight any gaps and start working to fill them.Every activity you engage in, including volunteering, short courses, and work experiences, becomes a building block for your narrative. And if your path is not perfect or linear, that is okay. What matters is how you tell your story. Explain the gaps and show growth and purpose.When the time comes to write your essays, do not rush it. Gather information. Read successful applications and consult others who have been through the process, either in person or through their online content on platforms such as YouTube or LinkedIn.Finally, remember that applying for scholarships takes resilience and patience. Some people get it on their first try, while others, like me, get it after learning from failure. Most importantly, put your best foot forward and leave the rest to God.Bonus tip: In this context, your theme is the niche or central focus that runs consistently through your entire application. Your story is the narrative that ties together your experiences, your motivation for applying, and your future aspirations.
