A man who never attended Law School posed as a lawyer for years, using a forged NBA seal to collect legal fees, before an EFCC petition unraveled it.

Lagos Court Convicts Fake Lawyer For Using Counterfeit NBA Seal

The Conviction

A 55-year-old man, John Nwawuto Anoruo, has been convicted and fined ₦270,000 by the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja for impersonating a legal practitioner and using a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Justice Abdulfattah Molawale Lawal delivered the judgment on Tuesday, August 4, after Anoruo pleaded guilty to a two-count charge brought by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The court imposed a fine of ₦120,000 on the first count and ₦150,000 on the second, bringing the total to ₦270,000, payable to the Lagos State Judiciary.

How It Unraveled

The case originated from a petition dated September 22, 2025, which legal practitioner Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika submitted to the EFCC, alleging that Anoruo had filed a petition against him and his law firm while falsely presenting himself as a qualified lawyer. A subsequent withdrawal letter dated March 5, 2026, also bore what appeared to be an NBA seal. EFCC investigating officer Umar Faruk Ahmad told the court that Anoruo admitted obtaining the counterfeit seal from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos during the investigation.

The Defendant's Background

Anoruo claimed he obtained a law degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 2018 through evening classes, but admitted he never attended the Nigerian Law School and was never called to the Nigerian Bar. According to the EFCC, he earned ₦7.5 million from a legal brief involving a dispute with Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited, and allegedly paid ₦1.5 million of that sum to a qualified lawyer to actually handle the matter on his behalf. Investigators also noted that when Anoruo honoured an EFCC invitation, he arrived at the Commission's office wearing a legal practitioner's attire.

The Judgment

Justice Lawal convicted Anoruo on both counts and ordered the forfeiture of the forged NBA seal and the legal practitioner's attire recovered from him to the Federal Government through the EFCC. The prosecution, led by Saadatu Mahmud Yabo, relied solely on the testimony of the EFCC investigating officer to establish the facts of the case before Anoruo's guilty plea brought the matter to a swift conclusion. The case highlights ongoing concerns within the profession about the ease with which counterfeit credentials can be used to defraud clients and taints the credibility of practising lawyers, reinforcing calls from the NBA and LPDC for stronger verification systems to catch impersonators before they can operate for years unchecked.
